How To Paint Abstract Wall Art

How to paint abstract wall art

I love abstract art! I love the freedom of it, it makes me feel like I choose how to feel when I see it, I can love it, hate it, it might make me sad, or happy, two people can look at the same time at an abstract painting and interpret completely different. That’s amazing!

The other thing I love about abstract art is that it easy to make. Not easy for the kind of materials or techniques you need to use, but for the idea of the project- you need to paint what you feel. Of course, abstract paintings are not only an expression of feeling, it could also be a visual language of nature, shape, people, cities, form, landscape and more. But if you don’t have a specific idea of what picture you want on the wall, but you know what colors you would like it to be (like I did!) don’t wait! Dot hesitate! Just paint what you feel with the colors you like and I promise you, you would have an amazing DIY abstract wall art!

So, I used couple of abstract art techniques for beginners and I will share them here, you can also check the video in my YouTube channel (after this paragraph or watch it here). But before we begin, here is what you will need for this DIY project:

  • Canvas
  • Acrylic paint
  • Brushes
  • Spatula or painting scraper (I used my bench scraper but you can even use a small mop)

About colors… I would recommend you choose no more than 4 colors, I used pink, mustard, deep blue and white. Choose a color pallet that will match your décor and your personality. The idea of the techniques I’m going to show you is that all the colors are going to blend together and create interesting shades and texture.

The scraper technique

Start in one spot around the edges, it can be anywhere, but choose a direction to go with your scraper. For example, if you want to do a horizontal stipe from right to left, start with a spot in the right edge. Add some paint (you can do it right out of the tube), use 2-3 colors every time, and then move your scraper horizontally from the edge with the paint to the other side (or as much as you feel like). The colors mix together creating a beautiful shades and colors. You can do layers over layers, you can do some horizontal strips and some vertical… go with your feeling.

The brush technique

I would use this technique after I did some painting scraper technique, but if you have a really big brush you can apply the scraper technique with it. But let’s say you a normal brush 🙂 the brush technique is very simple, you need to add colors in long or short paint smears (depend of your painting). You can mix colors in a pallet before you apply to the painting, or create new shades right on the canvas. This is good for filling some blank spots or to fix thing you don’t like.

I really love our new painting! Every time I look at it I feel something different or pay attention to a new aspect of it. This is exactly the well are décor I was looking for, with the colors I wanted! This is why I like DIY project for our home, they are costume made and reflect our vibe and personality. I would love to add more abstract are to our home, let me know about things you love or more techniques I should use.
