You know how sometimes the best things in life come to you without your intention. Like if out of nowhere an amazing opportunity come along, or you meet someone by chance and that’s become a great friendship, or maybe a great job offer you didn’t expect. This is what I feel like when I see an old furniture outside the street or if I find something that someone leave in the middle of the road. Yeah, I know it’s funny and crazy 🙂 but to me everything like that looks like a great opportunity to do something creative, to do a DIY project, I become so happy when I see a little chair or maybe a frame or a stool. I become so happy so I just have to take it with me, I don’t know what I’m going to do with it but I just have to have it.
Today I’m going to share with you a beginners sewing project that came to me just like that. my husband and I went for a walk in our neighborhood and as we go I spotted two little kids chairs, like the ones you can buy in at IKEA, so I told him we have to get them so he said to me “but honey, we don’t have kids yet haha why do we need two little chairs?”. I had to have a good reason because I really really wanted to take them home. Then I realized we are watching our friend’s children next weekend and they will love to have two little chairs to sit on while they are spending the weekend at our place. So I had a good reason and those chairs was in really good shape so we took them! At first I wanted to paint them or just leave it, I didn’t know if I would have the time to do something with them but then I had this brilliant idea to make a costume slip covers for chairs. So I made slipcovers for the chairs, one is a bear chair and the other one is a bunny chair 🙂 I think you can do any animal chair covers, get creative!
First I measured the back of the chair because I was sewing a chair back slipcovers. I decided to sew a cover that will fit the chair as a tight slipcover. My slipcover was like a box, but you can also do it without the sides that gives that boxy shape, just make your front and back pieces wider than the actual measurement so your cover could slide over it. It will be easier too because it is a armless chair slipcover.
The fabric I used is synthetic fur. It wasn’t really easy to sew with, I would recommend using fell heavy cotton, felt, canvas etc. for chair slip covers, and for the animals features I used felt.
After everything was precut it was very easy to assemble. I glued the animals felt features with fabric glue and sew the rest of the pieces as you can see in the video tutorial.
I’m sure you can find short chairs like these or maybe you already have them?! This is such a cute and affordable way to add beautiful décor to your kids room or nursery. Go make your own nursery chair slipcover!
